Marni’s story
My name is Marni Stuart, I an Interdisciplinary Australian designer, lecturer, PhD Candidate and mother of two.
I create surface patterns that engage with the fields of interiors, fashion, textiles, and product design. My work celebrates the native habitats through native Australian florals. I use drawing and other mark-making techniques to create my designs. Always starting with the hand, the work is textured and organic. The works are inspired by walks through the bushland near my home and celebrating the beautiful wildflowers found here. My practice is deeply embedded in experimentation and creativity.
Through my academic research, I investigate the methods and approaches of design, focusing on surface pattern design. My publications focus on observation, walking as method and botanicals in design.
I am a Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, teaching cross-disciplinary techniques, with a focus on visual communication design, design knowledge and design history. I specialise in online delivery and student transitions to higher education. I am also a certified Fellow through the Advaced HE program. Through my teaching, I aim to develop my student’s abilities to explore their own values as a method of harnessing their creativity.
